Unless you’ve been living underneath a rock the past week or so, you’ve heard about the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Covering an area of 3,850 square miles, and with about 200,000 gallons of oil leaking into the waters each day, the spill is going to require an extensive cleanup effort. For those who want to help, but live nowhere near the Gulf Coast, the non-profit Matter of Trust offers a great solution — getting your hair cut.
If you’re due for a trim, or are just looking for a reason to cut your locks off, you can help the oil spill clean up effort. Simply go get your hair cut (or do it yourself), making sure to save the clippings, and then sign up here and Matter of Trust will turn your hair into oil absorbing hairbooms and mats (you can donate pet hair as well). Undoubtedly it will take tons of hair (and nylon casings) to control the current spill, but it is a low cost solution that everyone can take part in.
If you do happen to live closer to the Gulf, or just prefer to help out with your wallet, there are plenty of organizations looking for volunteers and donations to aid in cleaning up the spill.
