Chipotle Turns Spam into Healthy School Lunches

As far as fast food goes Chipotle is fairly decent — they make a concerted effort to use organic, local produce, they source their animals from farmers who don’t follow the factory farm model (i.e. administering unnecessary antibiotics or growth hormones to the animals, caging or keeping animals in confined spaces), and they support family farms and sustainable growing practices (i.e. avoiding pesticides, rotating crops) when they can. Although Chipotle has recently come under fire for some of their calorie riddled burritos, they do offer quite a few healthy options (especially if you’re willing to eat smaller portions and skip the extra fixings and condiments). And now the chain is working on a new project that will trim down your inbox and help provide school children with nutritious cafeteria meals.

Chipotle has teamed up with the non-profit The Lunch Box to launch its “No Junk” campaign. The idea is simple: forward all of your junk e-mail (spam) to nojunk@chipotlejunk.com and for every 100,000 pieces received Chipotle will donate $10,000 to The Lunch Box, a web-based portal dedicated to providing schools with the information and tools necessary to provide students will healthy food options. The Lunch Box will use Chipotle’s donations to give 100,000 schools, servicing approximately 32 million children, access to 100 healthy, school-tested recipes created by the infamous Renegade Lunch Lady, Chef Ann Cooper.

The junk e-mail program will run through August or until Chipotle reaches its top contribution of $50,000. So get rid of the junk in your inbox and help support healthy eating in our public schools.
